The accessibility information gap is still very real. Researching destinations in 2026 should not involve sifting through hotel websites that tell you nothing useful — no door widths, no shower type, no mention of steps at the entrance. Just the word “accessible,” floating there as if it’s enough. It isn’t.

While we’re at it: can we retire “fully accessible” as a phrase? Fully accessible for whom, exactly? A step-free room might be perfect for a manual wheelchair user and completely unusable for someone with a power chair. The phrase means everything and nothing, and it lets providers think they’ve done their bit when the real work hasn’t started.

And finally — briefly — the rise of AI-generated accessibility descriptions. You know the ones: “This thoughtfully curated accommodation seamlessly integrates a suite of inclusive mobility solutions.” That’s a roll-in shower and a grab rail. Just say so.

TravelAble aims to cut through the confusion of accessible air travel

Accessibility guidance for air passengers with reduced mobility has long been a mess of jargon, contradictions, and hidden fine print. A new platform called TravelAble, launched this month by travel technology company Smartvel, is attempting to fix that. It centralises fragmented accessibility information from airlines and airports into a single structured system, tailoring guidance to each traveller’s individual profile — including their mobility equipment and battery type.

Crucially, it also translates baffling IATA service request codes (such as WCHR for wheelchair ramp and WCHC for full cabin assistance) into plain language. Research conducted during the platform’s development found that a third of travellers struggle to find clear accessibility information before a trip, and more than a quarter don’t know whether they’ll be able to board with their mobility equipment. Sound familiar?

Oregon becomes the first US state to earn “Accessibility Verified” status

Travel Oregon has just been recognised with a 2026 Travel + Leisure Global Vision Award for a genuinely landmark achievement: Oregon is now the first US state to earn “Accessibility Verified” status across its tourism listings. The verification is conducted through Wheel the World’s structured, on-site evaluation process — not self-reporting, not ADA compliance tick-boxes, but actual physical measurements across multiple dimensions of accessibility.

Verified listings are available on both traveloregon.com and wheeltheworld.com. Travel Oregon’s VP of Brand Stewardship described it as both “a moral and economic obligation.” We’d agree — and we’d love to see other states (and countries!) take note.

Europe’s most accessible cities for 2026

Barcelona tops Wheel the World’s 2026 ranking for the second year running, followed by Vienna — fresh off the 2025 European Commission Access City Award — and London, which has the continent’s highest restaurant accessibility rate. Berlin, Madrid, Paris, Oslo, and Copenhagen fill the middle spots, each with strong transport and attractions, and Oslo leading all European capitals for accessible hotels.

Valencia is a standout new entry at ninth, praised for its flat terrain and fully accessible transport network. At the same time, Rome closes the list at tenth — ancient cobblestones and all, but with accessible major landmarks and nearly half of its restaurants meeting accessibility standards.

Accessible travel is heading for the mainstream — and the numbers show it

A new analysis projects that by 2030, all 73 million Baby Boomers in the US will be aged 65 or over. With this demographic controlling more than half of all US household wealth, the travel industry is finally sitting up and taking notice. Research by Longwoods International already shows that 18% of travel parties require accessibility features — and because families increasingly travel together across generations, accessible accommodation affects the whole group booking, not just one member.

The message to hotels, airlines, and destinations is becoming hard to ignore: this isn’t a niche market. It never was.

April is Global Autism Awareness Month — and some of the world’s most visited tourist sites are quietly reshaping the visitor experience. Venues from the Natural History Museum in London to Disneyland Paris have introduced dedicated “quiet hours” for neurodivergent visitors: reduced lighting, lower sound levels, fewer crowds, and sensory maps sent in advance.

It’s a powerful reminder that accessibility is rarely just about ramps and lifts. It’s about designing experiences that work for every brain, not just the majority.

Fitting, perhaps, that “April” is thought to derive from the Latin aperire — “to open.”

For starters, our accommodation was far better suited to my needs: an Airbnb with an elevator, wide doors, and an en-suite bathroom. Not perfectly accessible for everyone, perhaps, but as you’ll know, there’s no such thing as “one size fits all” when it comes to barrier-free travel.

I was also pleased to discover that the beach we’d struggled to access last time was, in fact, accessible — you just needed a different entry point. They even had beach wheelchairs available with the assistance of the lifeguard team. A real win, and a first for me!

It served as a timely reminder that research is everything. Last time, we were woefully underprepared. This time, my wife had sought out accessible hotspots and things to do ahead of our arrival, and it made all the difference. It’s exactly why platforms like tabifolk are so important — spaces where we can share information and seek expert advice from people with boots on the ground in destinations all over the world.

The Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Paralympic Games are currently ongoing in Italy! Here's a fun fact to inspire your next trip: Italy is one of the most storied Paralympic host nations in the world — this is the third time it has hosted the Games, following the very first Paralympic Games ever held in Rome in 1960, and the 2006 Winter Paralympics in Turin. A country that has welcomed the world's greatest para-athletes three times over is certainly worth a visit!

I’m pretty excited this month: my brother has just arrived from the UK for a visit, and I’m looking forward to showing him all the amazing things southern Brazil has to offer. I’ll be keeping a close eye on accessibility everywhere we go, including the coastal city of Florianópolis and the mountainous regions of Rio Grande do Sul.

Sadly, this part of Brazil is often overshadowed by places like Rio de Janeiro—especially at this time of year, when carnival season is in full swing. But that doesn’t mean it isn’t worth visiting. In fact, I discovered today at a tourist information center at the airport that there’s an alarming shortage of accessibility information—something I’m keen to help change. I hope that in future tabifolk newsletters, you’ll enjoy reading about what I uncover along the way!

When we asked, “What’s the first thing you look for in an accessible hotel?” the answers were varied. Some travelers need elevators; others are tired of generic stock photos that hide the “nitty-gritty” details like bed height or door width.

But the overwhelming response? It’s all about the bathroom. More specifically, people want to see photos of the actual bathroom they’ll be using. It sounds like a basic request, yet even in 2026, finding this information remains surprisingly difficult.

While they’re not always as easy to tote around as the word “portable” suggests, these compact ramps can be life-changing for wheelchair users. In this practical read, 10 different ramps are put to the test by 10 real people (a modest sample, admittedly) before a clear winner emerges.

Ever notice the giant numbers on airport runways? They’re not lane markers—they’re a built-in compass. Each number shows the runway’s magnetic heading, rounded to the nearest ten degrees. A runway pointing east (90°) becomes 09; one facing south (180°) is 18. It’s a simple, universal system that lets pilots orient instantly, no translation needed.

The twist? Those numbers don’t last forever. Earth’s magnetic poles slowly drift, so airports periodically repaint runways to match the updated readings. It’s a quiet but crucial update—proof that even the ground beneath an airplane has to adapt to a changing planet.

I’ve had quite the time of it since we last sent you mail. I missed both Christmas and the New Year celebrations thanks to a pesky bout of pneumonia. Something I am reminded to watch out for and take care of when overdoing it during travel.

January takes its name from Janus, the Roman god of beginnings and transitions — a fitting symbol for travel and new possibilities. Janus is often shown with two faces: one looking back and one looking forward, reminding us that every journey connects past and future experiences.

In the spirit of Janus, January invites travelers to open new doors — not just to new destinations, but to more inclusive, barrier-free ways of exploring the world. Whether that means choosing accessible lodging, planning routes with mobility in mind, or simply learning how to make travel more welcoming for everyone, January is the perfect time to begin.

I’m back in Brazil now, with a bang. Someone turned up the heat in our absence. It really is something when you travel from 3 degrees and snow on the ground to 36 degrees and 94% humidity. Talk about being tossed from the freezer to the frying pan!

I’m a bit discombobulated, to be honest. People keep asking, “How was your vacation?”, but I swear, aren’t vacations meant to be relaxing? We crammed so much into two and a half short weeks, and to be honest, I don’t think we ever did quite get on top of the jet lag because of it!

Still, we saw plenty of Paris, which is always a pleasure. It was a joy to be able to introduce our 6-year-old to some of the charms that the city has on full display, 24/7. She was most impressed by both the Eiffel Tower (because, who could ever fail to be impressed?!) and the Moulin Rouge windmill! But we also made sure to take her to the Sacre Coeur, Notre Dame, and the Champs Élysées, as well.

I’ll be sharing much, much more about our adventures, our thoughts, and the challenging transportation problems we faced when trying to get around the place, in the coming weeks — in fact, I should have plenty more to share by the time the January newsletter drops — so keep your eyes peeled, if you’re interested!

For now, though, let’s crack on with this month’s tabifolk newsletter, shall we? I’ve elected to avoid all topics of Christmas, because, well… I think we all get a bit of Christmas fatigue around this time of year, don’t we? Or maybe that’s just me? The old Scrooge that I am!

Back in the day, I used to travel a lot — 40 countries and counting. Before moving to Brazil, I even had this wild idea of becoming the first wheelchair user to visit every country in the world. Audacious? Absolutely.

These days, I’m more of a family man with different priorities, but that travel bug never really goes away. I can’t wait to revisit a few old favourites and discover some new corners of the world along the way.

Grateful for the app!

While I’m away, I’ll be sharing travel updates right here on tabifolk — especially in the France group as well as the Europe group, too. I am bringing my laptop along (just in case work calls), but honestly, the idea of hunting for a café table every time I want to post isn’t exactly appealing. Thankfully, the tabifolk app makes everything so much easier!

You’ll probably get tired of me soon enough — I’ll be snapping every perfectly flaky pain au chocolat and maybe even the odd beret-wearing poodle on a unicycle (too far?). Hey tabi-gang! How’s everyone doing?

You may have noticed on social media over the past month that we’ve been highlighting what makes tabifolk unique. This started with a mini-series of popular groups you can join and interact with via the tabifolk website or app. We then shared some of the most recent popular discussions, followed by older blog posts you might have missed in recent months.

In keeping with this, I decided to share one additional group, discussion, and blog post that was not previously shared on social media, in the hopes of whetting your appetite and getting more of you good folks onto tabifolk, more often!

It’s also Disability Pride Month — a time to celebrate identity, resilience, and the progress we’ve made. While the topic has been explored widely across the internet, and doesn’t directly intersect with accessible travel in every case, it is a reminder of how far we’ve come in making the world — and the travel industry — more inclusive.

As someone who relies on a mobility scooter to stay independent, I’ve always been drawn to the beauty of mountain towns like Gatlinburg, Tennessee, and the snow-covered landscapes of Colorado. But winter travel brings a unique set of challenges if you use a mobility device. Snow, ice, hills — they can all turn a relaxing trip into a stressful situation if you aren’t prepared. Check out the recent video I made using a model called the Wrangler 2, made by Pride Mobility.

You might wonder if it’s possible to enjoy snowy destinations with a mobility scooter or wheelchair. The answer is yes, but it requires the right equipment, careful planning, and important safety precautions….

The Patagonia is the southernmost piece of land besides the Antartica. It’s a remote destination full of mesmerizing landscapes and vibrant wildlife, but it poses quite a lot of challenges for explorers with reduced mobility. A friend of mine and I, two manual wheelchair users with the ability to stand-up and take a few steps in a pinch, decided to give it a try. We began preparing for the trip more than six months in advance. Here’s a summary of how it went and what we learned (a more in-depth accessibility review of each of the activities can be found on the PDF linked at the end of this article).

Punta Arenas & General Considerations

The first of the two main hubs to explore the region, Punta Arenas is a windy capital with extreme weather in winter and mild to chilly temperatures in summer, when we visited. Be aware that if you go from April to October, you won’t be able to see Magellan penguins, a must while in the area. Also, the colder it gets the more difficult it is to move around because of ice and snow. In summer, streets near the city center towards the sea, although with a slight incline and the occasional rough curb-cut, are quite easy to navigate. The higher parts of the city are another story. For instance, getting to Cerro de la Cruz (a famous viewpoint overlooking it) on a wheelchair requires a very long detour and determination, due to stairs and/or crazy slopes….
